William Shatner shocks hosts simply by revealing his age

In a world where time ticks mercilessly onward, one man has defied the very essence of ageing: the legendary William Shatner, the man who boldly went where no nonagenarian has gone before.

As Shatner prepares to celebrate his 93rd trip around the sun, fans worldwide are scratching their heads in disbelief. The reason? Well, it seems that Captain Kirk himself has stumbled upon the fountain of youth and decided to keep it all to himself.

The commotion started when Shatner made a guest appearance on the US Today Show, looking fresher than a daisy in springtime. Fans took to social media to express their shock, with one incredulous viewer commenting, "Damn, he's still sharp and has his hair. I would never have guessed 93." And another chimed in with, "I would've guessed 67 or 68."

Forget "live long and prosper"; it seems the new motto is "live long and confound the heck out of everyone".

Even the hosts of the Today Show were left flabbergasted by Shatner's youthful glow. They couldn't resist asking the man himself for his secret to longevity. And what pearls of wisdom did he impart? "Don't tell anybody [your age]." Ah, sage advice indeed. It seems the real secret to ageing gracefully is to maintain an air of mystery.

But let's rewind to 2021 when Shatner was grilled by a journalist about whether he'd had any "serious work" done. His response? A witty comeback, of course. "No, have you?" Touché, Shatner, touché. And when pressed further, he simply attributed his youthful appearance to good genes, lots of horseback riding and a healthy dose of bewilderment about the world.

Despite his apparent disdain for the number 90 ("It's disgusting," he once declared in an interview), Shatner finds himself hurtling towards the ripe old age of 93 with all the grace and poise of a starship navigating through a meteor shower. And if his recent TV appearance is anything to go by, he's showing no signs of slowing down.

So let's all take a leaf out of Shatner's playbook, shall we? If anyone asks for the secret to your eternal youth, just give them that trademark Shatner smirk and say: "It's classified."

Images: NBC | Wikimedia | Tik Tok

Popular TV host diagnosed with same condition as Bruce Willis

Popular American TV host Wendy Williams has shared her diagnosis after being plagued by "hurtful rumours".

The 59-year-old's medical team announced in a lengthy statement that she has been diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia: the same conditions actor Bruce Willis is battling.

The news comes after Williams' family confirmed she had checked in to a facility to treat cognitive issues.

“Questions have been raised at times about Wendy’s ability to process information and many have speculated about Wendy’s condition, particularly when she began to lose words, act erratically at times, and have difficulty understanding financial transactions,” her medical team said.

They said Williams' symptoms first began in 2023, and was diagnosed with the neurological conditions just weeks later after undergoing a series of tests.

Her team said both conditions have “already presented significant hurdles in Wendy’s life”.

“Wendy would not have received confirmation of these diagnoses were it not for the diligence of her current care team, who she chose, and the extraordinary work of the specialists at Weill Cornell Medicine,” they said.

“Receiving a diagnosis has enabled Wendy to receive the medical care she requires.”

Williams chose to share the news to “advocate for understanding” and to “raise awareness” for the difficult conditions.

“Unfortunately, many individuals diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia face stigma and misunderstanding, particularly when they begin to exhibit behavioural changes but have not yet received a diagnosis,” her team said.

“There is hope that with early detection and far more empathy, the stigma associated with dementia will be eliminated, and those affected will receive the understanding, support, and care they deserve and need."

“Wendy is still able to do many things for herself. Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humour and is receiving the care she requires to make sure she is protected and that her needs are addressed."

“She is appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way.”

The TV presenter has previously been open with her medical battle with Graves’ disease and lymphedema, as well as other significant challenges related to her health.

How to navigate a parent’s cancer diagnosis – like Princes William and Harry will now have to do

Lydia Harkin, Nottingham Trent University

King Charles’ cancer diagnosis means the royal family has joined the approximately 3 million families in the UK affected by the disease. His family has already gathered around in support. William, Prince of Wales, has taken over some public duties for his father. And younger son Harry, who lives in California, flew to the UK to visit after the diagnosis was announced.

If you, like William and Harry, are navigating a parent’s diagnosis, you are not alone. Around 400,000 people are diagnosed each year. This can be a frightening and difficult time for families, and can change family dynamics.

Adult children may find themselves offering emotional and practical support for a parent in a way that has not been required before, through managing medications and symptoms, travel to medical appointments, help with meal preparation and financial support.

It can be rewarding to support a loved one and an important way to actively work together, but it can also be stressful. Studies have found that family caregivers are generally more anxious and more likely to hide their emotional distress when compared with their family member with cancer.

Being a supportive family, even in conflict

Family support can act as a “social cure” against the stress of a life-changing illness. The social cure theory proposes that being a part of a social group (or multiple groups) has benefits for our health and wellbeing. Social groups, particularly those with whom we strongly identify, like families, provide support and help us to combat times of stress.

The key psychological component here is that people feel they belong to and identify with their groups. While undergoing cancer treatment, someone may not be able to participate in their usual social groups – through work or hobbies – as much as they used to. These groups may then become incompatible with a person’s new identity as a cancer survivor.

Of course, not all families work together harmoniously, and may be in conflict through divorce, separation or estrangement. Social psychologists have found that “incompatible” social groups can lead to poorer mental health.

Separated families can still come together and be a helpful social group, but they must offer the kind of support that their loved one needs. To figure this out, it is important to think about the person’s identity within the family.

For example, a father may view his identity as an advisor, but a cancer diagnosis requires him to be cared for and to seek advice. He may feel a sense of loss for his typical family role, a loss of meaning and of control.

However, if his family communicates openly about the difficulties they are all facing, the father may be able to continue to advise his family, in addition to receiving their advice. This can help to maintain his sense of identity as an advisor within his family, while navigating a new status as a cancer survivor.

Communication and support networks

Cancer throws patients and their loved ones into a complex health system, often for the first time, where medical decisions and terminology become important every day. Understanding the “language of cancer” can help families feel more in control after a diagnosis.

Equally important is communication within a family. Talking about the cancer, rather than treating it as a taboo topic, can improve mental health for both patients and their families. It may also be an opportunity to empower patients and their loved ones to seek outside support, such as counselling.

Families spread across geographical distances (like the royal family) can offer emotional support through regular phone calls or online tools. During the pandemic, I developed and trialled an app to help older adults combat loneliness. The app allowed them to see a digital map of their social groups, including family members.

Your family member with cancer may feel like a burden. This is a common fear in older adulthood generally. But reminding them of how many people are in their lives – and how many people they support – can combat this feeling.

Social media is one way to get more involved in these reciprocal support networks. In my work, families affected by cancer have reported using online communities to better understand what their family is going through. Private social media groups dedicated to illness can be helpful spaces to meet other patients and families, share experiences and normalise cancer.

Cancer communities exist on Instagram, on YouTube and X/Twitter and through registered cancer charities like Macmillan Cancer Support. These online resources all provide a way to build a network following a cancer diagnosis.

Just as group identification is important within families, having more groups to connect to can act as a buffer during stressful times and help you all cope with your new reality.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Downton Abbey star's shock split

Hugh Bonneville, famous for his role in Downton Abbey, has parted ways with his wife, Lucinda "Lulu" Williams, after 25 years of marriage. This revelation came shortly after Bonneville attended a co-star's wedding without his wedding ring.

A spokesperson for the actor confirmed the separation, stating, "I can confirm that Hugh Bonneville and Lulu Williams have separated," as reported by the UK Sun.

Sources close to the situation reveal that the decision to split was initiated by Bonneville himself. Williams reportedly felt that their lengthy 25-year marriage had been devalued, given Bonneville's recent focus on various aspects of his life.

The source explained, "Hugh has been away from home filming a lot this year. He has lost a bit of weight this summer, he was looking trim, tanned and relaxed."

Signs of trouble in their relationship first emerged when the 59-year-old actor attended the wedding of his Downton Abbey co-star, Michelle Dockery, without his wedding ring and without Lulu.

Their last public appearance together dates back to April when they attended a gala at the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Bonneville had previously praised his estranged wife, referring to her as his "bedrock" and "anchor", according to the UK Sun. He humorously recounted their initial connection, saying, "Lulu was running a marquee company … my mother rang her to hire some chairs or something and said, 'Do you remember Hugh?' and that was how we reconnected," though he jokingly added that it "infuriated" him that he had to "give full credit" to his mother.

To commemorate their 20th anniversary, the couple renewed their vows at the Graceland chapel in Las Vegas just five years ago. Bonneville and Williams initially met as teenagers but didn't embark on a romantic relationship until their 30s. They exchanged their vows in November 1998 and share a son, Felix, who is now 20 years old.

Images: Instagram

Socceroos legend slams Prince William's "patronising" Matildas remark

Craig Foster has slammed Prince William's "patronising pat on the head" for the Matildas after their defeat in the England v. Australia Women's World Cup semi-finals.

Foster, a Socceroos legend and staunch supporter of Australia becoming a republic, reacted angrily to Prince William’s attempt to congratulate the Matildas in the wake of their 3-1 defeat against the Lionesses.

Shortly after the game, Prince William sent a message to both teams.

“What a phenomenal performance from the Lionesses — on to the final!” William wrote to the official Prince and Princess of Wales Twitter account after the tense semi-final came to a close.

“Commiserations to the Matildas, you’ve played brilliantly and been fantastic co-hosts of this World Cup. W”

King Charles also chimed in on the messages of support, and was full of praise for both teams.

“My wife and I join all our family in sending the mighty Lionesses our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the World Cup, and in sharing our very best wishes for Sunday’s match,” he said.

“While your victory may have cost the magnificent Matildas their chance for the greatest prize in the game, both teams have been an inspiration on and off the pitch – and, for that, both nations are united in pride, admiration and respect.”

But Foster, who is the co-chair of the Australian Republican Movement, saw through the royal family's messages and didn't want to hear their condescending messages of support and praise.

“You’ve been proudly supporting England all tournament. Not a word for Australia. Not that we expect it. We prefer the honesty. Without the patronising pat on the head in defeat,” Foster tweeted.

“Support the Lionesses & let us get on with our business, mate.”

Foster's message welcomed a mixed reaction, with many agreeing with his sentiment and reinforcing the notion of Australia becoming a republic, while others thought it was obvious that William would be barracking for England, as he is president of Britain’s Football Association.

One person simply added to Craig's tweet saying, "What a weird take on a quite gracious sentiment."

"Am I dreaming?": Prince William serves up burgers from food van

The Prince of Wales has stunned a few unsuspecting customers of a London food truck by serving them burgers.

In collaboration with popular YouTube channel Sorted Food, Prince William took part in the stunt to promote The Earthshot Prize, a mission he founded in hopes to repair the planet.

They worked together to create a plant-based 'Earthshot burger', which they served to customers, in the clip shared on YouTube.

As part of the stunt, Prince William first hid his identity by facing away from the customers, when it was time to serve the food, he turned around with burgers in hand to the shock of the diners.

"My brain took three seconds to buffer - am I dreaming?" one said after seeing Prince William serving burgers.

"I was lost for words," said another.

"I was shell-shocked" said a third.

The Prince of Wales also praised last year's Earthshot Prize winners, and explained that the dishes served used three of their innovations, which all represented a solution to help repair the planet.

"For those of you who don't know, the Earthshot Prize is there to repair and regenerate the planet. Everything you see here comes from the winners from last year," he said.

The ingredients for the burgers were sourced by Indian start-up Kheyti, who support local farmers and help shelter their crops from unpredictable weather events and pests.

The burgers were cooked in a cleaner-burning portable stove from Mukuru Clean Stoves, which aims to reduce air pollution, and the food was served on Notpla takeaway containers made from natural and biodegradable materials.

This is the verdict from the diners: "the best burger we've ever had."

The Prince also joked with diners saying that the global Earthshot Prize started back when he "had hair."

"It's designed as an environmental prize tackling the world's greatest environmental problems," he said.

"We liked the idea that this is a big deal, this is like something we really need to aim for, but it's about saving the planet, not taking us to the moon."

He added: "And there's many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I'm like, hang on, let's not give up on this planet yet."

Images: Kensington Palace/ Sorted Food YouTube

Nat Barr’s chilling William Tyrrell question

New TV footage has revealed that William Tyrrell's biological mother was concerned about her son’s treatment by his foster family years before the police began their investigation.

His mum - who for legal reasons cannot be identified - was concerned about how her son was being looked after.

“From the start, I always had concerns and I wrote letters back and forth to one of the carers,” she said in a 2018 interview with Seven.

“Because I didn't really like the care that I thought he was being given. My son would come home with bruises, snotty noses, not dressed appropriately for the weather…” she added.

This part of the interview was previously cut out of the final segment in 2018, but the never-before-seen footage was recently broadcasted on Seven’s Spotlight special on Sunday, reigniting people’s interest.

The clip was shown despite a court suppression order which prevented Tyrrell’s mum from being named or pictured.

On Monday, Sunrise host Nat Barr questioned former homicide cop Charlie Bezzina about the revelations from the clip.

Bezzina commented that it was no surprise that Tyrrell’s biological mum was concerned for her child’s well-being.

“That's to be expected from a biological mother to be a little bit bitter towards the foster mother - to have a child taken from you is quite dramatic,” Bezzina said.

Last month police handed over a brief of evidence to prosecutors, a move which could see Tyrrell’s foster mother - who also cannot be named for legal reasons - being charged in connection with his disappearance.

Bezzina has slammed the police case against Tyrrell’s foster mother, which he deemed as “very weak” and believes to be based on circumstantial evidence.

To which Barr responded with the chilling question: “So basically you're saying we have no idea who killed William and we're no closer to finding that out?”

“Absolutely. And I think it's unfortunate that the current investigators have done the investigation through the media,” Benzzina admitted.

Image: Sunrise on Seven

Prince William's enormous salary leaked

Prince William's extraordinary salary has been revealed, with the Prince of Wales set to rake in an eight-figure sum for the last six months alone.

According to the Duchy of Cornwall’s 2023 annual report, the 41-year-old royal received a private income of just under £6 million (A$11,434,000) this year.

William became the Duke of Cornwall following the death of Queen Elizabeth and his father, Charles’ ascension to the throne, meaning he is now also entitled to any surplus of profits from the dukedom.

In the financial year of 2022 to 2023, the Duchy recorded net profits of £24.048 million ($45,800,000), according to the report, which was up £1.02 million ($1,944,260) from £23.024 million ($43,886,000) from the year before.

The Prince of Wales would usually be entitled to the full $45.8 million profit as his private income, but because he only became heir halfway through the financial year, he received a fraction of his income.

The Palace also asked that as a “one-off associated with the change in Dukes of Cornwall”, the Duchy team retain a proportion of the surplus for “working capital purposes” – i.e. the day-to-day costs of running of the estate.

William was therefore left with an income of £5.9 million, or about $11 million AUD for his work.

In a foreword for the Duchy’s financial accounts, Prince William paid tribute to his father for leaving an “indelible mark” on the dukedom and promised to work hard to make a difference in his new position.

“I am committed to the cause of tackling climate change and I am proud of the estate’s efforts to contribute to this challenge,” William wrote.

“If we can also help respond to social challenges such as mental health and homelessness, I will feel my term as Duke has been worthwhile.”

Police recommend charges against William Tyrrell's foster mother

Detectives believe they have gathered enough evidence to bring charges against William Tyrrell's foster mother after his disappearance nine years ago.

Reports from 9News shared that detectives handed a brief to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) earlier this month with evidence against William's foster mother, who cannot be named, recommending she be charged with perverting the course of justice and interfering with a corpse.

Police have ben investigating the potential cause of William's disappearance in 2014, with allegations there was a deadly accident at their family home in Kendall on the NSW Mid North Coast, and the then-three-year-old's body was disposed of by his foster mother.

The 58-year-old has long denied any involvement with William's disappearance.

It now remains up to the DPP to give advice on whether the woman should go before a court, with any charges beginning a lengthy legal process.

A judge or jury would then need to decide whether the evidence was sufficient to prove any charges.

William Tyrrell was last seen alive at his foster family's home in Kendall in September 2014, with last Tuesday marking what would've been his 12th birthday.

Since his disappearance, there have been many theories over the past nine years with suspects targeted then cleared, and an inquest put on hold.

A new team of homicide detectives reviewed the case in 2020, but found no new evidence or remains.

Since then, police have quietly been building evidence in support of allegations that William's foster mother covered up his accidental death and disposed of his body.

The potential charges include perverting the course of justice and interfering with a corpse, with the latter charge carrying a maximum sentence of 14 years behind bars.

"Ended for good": Prince William launches project inspired by Lady Di

Prince William has launched his most ambitious project to date, announcing his plan to end homelessness in the UK within five short years.

The Prince of Wales set out to visit six areas in the UK that experience different types of homelessness with a distinct set of challenges, outlining a detailed plan to see homelessness eradicated.

On his two-day tour, the 41-year-old royal shared that his late mother, Princess Diana, was a big inspiration behind the project, after she helped open William's eyes to the nation-wide problem.

In the south London borough of Lambeth, Prince William described how he was inspired by "heart-breaking" visits to shelters he made with his mother as a child.

"My first visit to a homelessness shelter was when I was 11 with my mother," he told the Mosaic Clubhouse, which supports people with mental health problems.

"The visits we made, left a deep and lasting impression."

"I met so many extraordinary people and listened to so many heart-breaking personal stories. Too many people have found themselves without a stable and permanent place to call home."

"Through these visits, I have seen first-hand the breadth and complexities of homelessness."

William said he hoped the Homewards program would "inspire belief throughout the UK and beyond that homelessness can be ended for good".

Prince William's Homewards program focuses on preventing homelessness before it begins, bringing together all organisations working in the sector to create solutions that target local challenges.

The launch of the project, which was two years in the making, comes days before what would have been Diana's 62nd birthday on July 1st.

A major focus of Homewards will be on providing homes to those who need them.

"I am pleased to stand here today at the start of our path to ending homelessness," he said.

"Over the next five years, I believe that we have a unique opportunity to develop innovative new solutions and scale tangible impact. This will inspire belief throughout the UK – and beyond – that homelessness can be ended for good."

10 truly inspirational movies

Have you got a favourite film that just makes you feel good? Inspiring movies come in all shapes and sizes, but often they involve stories of love and strength, overcoming obstacles, or changing people’s lives for the better. See if your favourite fee-good film made our top 10.

1. DEAD POETS SOCIETY

This film resonates with a lot of people as it shows how much a good teacher can be a role model for the kids they teach. This is one of Robin William’s most well known roles, and even Ethan Hawke makes an appearance.

2. A BEAUTIFUL MIND

It’s nice to see an action star like Russell Crowe in such a different style of movie. Just like the title suggests, this really is a beautiful film. The fact that the story of the brilliant mathematician who also happens to be a paranoid schizophrenic is true makes it even more moving. It shows how someone who has faced adversity and prejudice can overcome the odds to come out on top as a Nobel Prize winner.

3. BILLY ELLIOT

Overcoming adversity is nearly always a sure-fire way to move the audience to tears. Not only is Billy trying to do ballet when his father doesn’t approve, but he is also growing up in a single parent family without much money to live on. This is a great film about following your dreams.

4. ERIN BROCKOVICH

Another true story that shows you how important it is to stand up for the people who need it most. Julia Roberts is great as go-getter Erin Brockovich in this film. The great humour adds a fun element to this film.

5. FORREST GUMP

One of Tom Hanks most famous roles, Forrest Gump is another story that follows the underdog overcoming obstacles within so many parts of his life. The soundtrack is amazingly nostalgic and takes you back to a simpler time. The supporting cast really brings the story to life too.

6. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Underdog alert! Well, slumdog that is. This hugely popular film gives us an insight into life in an Indian slum. It shows that despite abject poverty, it is absolutely possible to find love and happiness.

7. THE BLIND SIDE

Another great true story with leading lady Sandra Bullock as the tough talking mother. After taking in a homeless boy, the family encourages him to follow his destiny and become a football star.

8. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Not just one to watch at Christmas, let this classic inspire you at any time of year. A great film that shows us how easy it is to get caught up in our own problems.

9. SOUL SURFER

The true-story element is both shocking and moving in this film based on surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost an arm in a shark attack. Despite her horrific ordeal, she didn’t do what most people would have done and quit surfing. Instead she followed her dream to achieve amazing success.

10. PAY IT FORWARD

A great concept here, about doing something nice for people and not expecting anything back. It could be family, friends or even strangers. The story will really make you think about the way society works.

“The heart of Hollywood” Treat Williams dead at 71

Richard Treat Williams, a Hollywood heavyweight with over 129 acting credits to his name, has passed away at the age of 71.

The actor was involved in a tragic accident with a car while riding his motorbike in Dorset, Vermont. Treat was the only person who sustained injuries in the crash, and while a helicopter was called in to airlift him to hospital, he sadly passed away.

As Dorset’s fire chief Jacob Gibble told People, investigators believed that the car’s driver had been turning and didn’t notice the motorbike.

And Treat’s agent of 15 years, Barry McPherson, said the same while confirming the news to the publication.

“He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off," McPherson said. "I'm just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.

"He was an actor's actor. Filmmakers loved him. He's been the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s. He was really proud of his performance this year. He's been so happy with the work that I got him. He's had a balanced career."

Treat’s family later issued a statement regarding his passing to Deadline, where they shared that “it is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident.

“As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time. Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him.

“We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and please continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers.”

Treat is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam Van Sant, and their two children, Gill and Ellie, as well as his significant Hollywood legacy.

He was a star across both the screen and stage over the course of his impressive career, with over 50 years of experience behind him. From Prince of the City to A Streetcar Named Desire, Hair, Chicago Fire, Everwood, and Miss Congeniality 2, he’d dipped his toes in a wide variety of content.

Treat won over fans and co-workers alike with his presence, and they felt the weight of his passing, taking to social media to share their grief, and to pay tribute to the late star.

“We are heartbroken over the passing of beloved … star of Chesapeake Shores, The Christmas House and so much more,” the Hallmark Channel wrote. “We will forever cherish him in our hearts, and extend our condolences to Treat’s family, friends, and loved ones.”

“Working with Treat Williams in Mamet’s Speed the Plow at Williamstown in ‘91 was the start of great friendship. Damn it, damn it. Treat, you were the best. Love you,” writer and director Justine Bateman shared.

“Treat Williams was a passionate, adventurous, creative man. In a short period of time, he quickly befriended me & his adventurous spirit was infectious. We worked on just 1 film together but occasionally connected over the years. Kind and generous with advice and support. RIP,” actor Wendell Pierce said of Treat.

And on behalf of many, actor Billy Baldwin noted down just a handful of the qualities he would remember his friend by, writing that “he truly and deeply cared about what’s going on here in America and around the world. Climate change, social justice, freedom, truth, tolerance… love. Beloved by his family, friends, fans, colleagues… his community.

“A terrible loss. You will be missed.”

He had it all.
Smart.
Talented.
Funny.
Charming.
Successful.
Handsome.
Compassionate.
Heart of gold.
And that name… Treat Williams.

He truly and deeply cared about what’s going on here in America and around the world.
